Welcome, wives and widows of deacons. Tim has opened the “Fellowship” section of Catholic Deacon to wives. Some articles include women, and since a married deacon’s first vocation is his marriage, and since most deacons are married, a place for wives seems a natural. This addition can make use of the fact that women have so much to offer. Many women share a ministry with their deacon husband, and others have ministry that parallels their husband’s. The inclusion in the Fellowship section can be important and affirming of their ministries and vocation. Wives and widows, as their husbands, are co-heirs of heaven, and their shared vocation of marriage has many intersections with the deaconate.
We ask St. Luke, whom St. Paul referred to as "the beloved physician” to be our standard bearer, and we ask Mary as a central figure who walked the way of the cross with Christ to be our standard in the vineyard of Christ. When the disciples asked Jesus where he lived, He responded saying, “Come and see.” So too we invite you to come to Catholic Deacon, a good place, where we joyfully acknowledge you as person and as present, and ask you to share with us your experiences, your best thinking and ideas, and your wisdom. Maywe all find this an advantage and grace.
I feel humbled, grateful and happy that Tim asked me to moderate this section, and hope you will find it a rich source of support and encouragement. My husband, Leon, has been the Director of the Diaconate Program in the Archdiocese of San Francisco for almost 20 years. We went through the formation program together as a couple for 4 years before his 1990 ordination. My own ministries have included care for the elderly and / or infirm in 5 care homes or hospital settings, parish Eucharistic Minister and Lector. Prior to that I began children’s ministry in various settings, and have been associated with parish renewal, and the Cursillo Movement. After my husband and I were married, we went as a team to parishes in the South Bend, Indiana, area to explain the changes of Vatican II at the request of the Bishop of the So. Bend/Fort Wayne diocese. As a couple, we have felt called and excited about helping the Kingdom of God be more clear, more present and more inviting to all and to each other.
May God bless us all, every one.
