My understanding is that deacons are supposed to go on retreat at least once a year. Our diocese sponsors a deacon retreat every year (wives are included, if they care to attend), but people can go there own way as well if they like. I'm really entertaining the idea of going down to the Trappist Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky for a silent retreat in addition to our diocesan deacon retreat this year. I could use the break. (I was there years ago).

As Director of Formation, I take my annual retreats with my students and not the deacons of the Diocese.

In our archdiocese, the place of assignment of the deacon pays for the deacon retreat each year, and the payment includes payment for the wife, if the deacon is married. Ginny Kortenkamp Archdiocese of San Francisco

Ginny Kortenkamp Archdiocese of San Francisco This is true in our diocese as well. We generally have a choice between a number of dates which keeps the groups smaller. One problem we are having though is that retreat houses are closing so the choice of venues has been steadily decreasing to the point where for the coming year there is only one place to go. Our canonically required retreats must be fulfilled at on of these retreats that are sponsored by the diocese but paid for by the parishes we are assigned to unless the parish is too poor to pay for it.
