Simple question this week - when assisting at Mass, do you wear just a stole, or a dalmatic? (We'll assume there is a stole under the dalmatic. ) After taking the poll, you might also want to reply with a little more detail about who bought/owns the vestments, etc. In my own case, I couldn't really afford to buy a set of dalmatics for about 9 years or so I simply wore stoles I had purchased myself or that had been given to me as gifts. During a trip to Italy a few years ago I bought a full set of dalmatics and now I feel "naked" without one at Mass. Since that time, my pastor bought a set of matching rose colored vestments for us and just a few months ago he bought me (the parish) a dalmatic that matches the one he weaes for Lent, as well as a matching white dalmatic for the Easter season. I think that parishes in my diocese are now encouraged to buy dalmatics for deacons to wear though that wasn't really the case when I was ordained. As usual, the poll will stay open for 30 days and your response to the POLL stays strictly confidential, but if you REPLY to this thread it will appear as usual. Tim

I have always worn both the stole and dalmatic while assisting at Mass. My parish had a full set (less rose) when I arrived as deacon. My wife and I purchased and donated a rose dalmatic and stole to the parish which roughly matches the priest's. Interestingly, one of the visiting priests who assists our pastor on Sundays refuses to ever wear the rose vestments.

My parish does not own any deacon Vestments, and my pastor was not interested in purchasing any when I was assigned to his parish.
When I was ordained, the diocese got a group rate on a set of white Dalmatics/Stoles - so everyone in my ordination class purchased a matching set. They were made by a group of Nuns in Boston, and are simple, but nice quality...
I used some of the gift money I received to have that same group of sisters make me green and purple sets as well.
A parishioner made me a very nice quilted purple stole as an ordination gift, so at least a couple weekends during Lent and Advent, I will wear only that stole (don't want her to think I am ungrateful, and it is a very nice stole)!
A parishioner whose daughter was just baptized at the Easter Vigil (I helped with the prep) sews and wanted to sew me a stole... so she and her daughter made me a red stole that I wore on Palm Sunday and Good Friday....
Having vestments that are gifts (especially homemade) is really cool... I think of the people and the use of their God-given talents every time I vest!

I always wear a dalmatic at every Mass. I purchased my four colors (green, white, red, and purple) in honor of my late Father. My parish has a set of rose vestments donated by the other deacon and his wife.

We have two deacons at our parish, and the parish has purchased two sets of dalmatics in all the liturgical colors, with the exception of rose, but they are going to purchase those in the near future. We provide our own stoles.

I was given a white dalmatic set at ordination and over the years acquired a full set in all colors out of my own pocket. Our church has noting for a deacon and doesn't even care to consider it. I do believe that the proper vestment at mass is the dalmatic.

I wear the dalmatic and stole at every Mass; with the exception of daily Mass, then I wear only the stole. I purchased all of my dalmatics with the exception of the dalmatic for the diocese; my pastor purchased that one. My daughters each picked a dalmatic, (one white, one for lent with stations scenes on it) and my wife also picked a dalmatic (Marian) and my parents purchased a rose dalmatic in honor of my late grandmother. My green, purple, and red are simple but nice and will match pretty much any priest chasuble.

I have a full set of dalmatics that I purchased on my own. The people of the church contributed money to purchase a matching set of vestments for the pastor, and a second dalmatic for Christmas and Easter. The church is not air conditioned so during the summer months I don't wear the dalmatic. We have a second deacon assigned to the parish who does not have his own dalmatics. When we serve together we wear alb and stole.

We have three deacons at our parish and we have dalmatics for all of us in all the colors (including "rose".) They may be the inexpensive ones ($60 or so) but they do the job. All of the chasubles of our five priests are eclectic and only two match our dalmatics.

Eleven years ago I was assigned to a parish that had no deacon vestments. I bought cheap dalmatics with parish money is the three main colors. The next pastor bought matching vestments in all colors except rose. The current pastor and assistant were educated in Rome and have their own baroque vestments and for the most part prefer to not use any matching vestments.

I wear a Stole in Ordinary time, a Dalmatic at all other times. My gifted wife makes my vestments for me!

I answered "dalmatic." That's true on Sundays and solemnities and feasts on weekdays (and a few memorials for which I have particular devotion, like St. Benedict). On almost all memorials and weekdays I wear the stole without dalmatic — which violates my saying that "when the priest wears a chasuble, the deacon should wear a dalmatic."
The parish bought me a "Coronation" dalmatic and a second stole. They also bought the white "Boston" dalmatic. At ordination, a friend gave me a reversible white/green stole. Apart from that, I've bought all my vestments. I have several stoles in each color except rose; ditto, dalmatics. I bought a violet chasuble and a red one to match dalmatics I was purchasing. I bought a couple of dalmatics that match chasubles already there. But about half my vestments don't match chasubles.

The four deacons in our parish all wear stole and dalmatic at Mass. The parish purchased a complete set of vestments for us to match those worn by our priests about 9 years ago. At ordination my wife purchased a complete set of vestments for me as an ordination gift. This has proved to be a great benefit because I can take my vestments with me when I travel without worry of depriving my brother deacons of their use while I am gone. On rare occasions (baptisms, holy hour, benediction etc.) we do wear alb and stole only, but most of the time we are fully vested. Mike

Normally, I wear a dalmatic when I am preaching and on special feasts and holidays. I had to buy my own - green, purple, white and red - so they do not match the priest's vestments. On oridnary Sundays, I just wear a stole. Our other deacon chooses not to wear a dalmatic ever (says he's now like Pope Francis - simple!!) I'm surpsied to see how many here say they wear a dalmatic all the time. I do not think that is the norm in our diocese. Be thankful if your parish will spend the money for matching vestments!

As Director of Permanent Deacons, when a deacon is newly assigned to a parish, I encourage the parish to purchase a set of dalmatics.
At our cathedral, there is a "diocesan" set of dalmatics. At our seminary, dalmatics are also supplied.
Currently, I wear a stole when assisting at our parish. The parish is committed to purchasing a set of dalmatics this year.

I always wear a Dalmatic when assisting at Mass, whether there is a "direct" match or not. At my 1st assignment the pastor was very reluctant to let me wear one, since the GIRM had the words "less Solemnity" and he used that as the reason, coupled with the fact he called around and no one else did either. Of course, that was the norm in those days. Within a year he ended purchasing 2 for me, and reimbursement for one I bought. The other was a gift. I agree, it is not the norm anywhere, but excuses for not doing so are!

I have a White Dalmatic that belonged to my father and a Diocesan Dalmatic. I wear them when appropriate. We would like to have all the sets however hurricane Katrina wiped out what we had. Hopefully we will get a complete set when we can afford them we are still in rebuild mode. Then I will wear them everyday. Simple question this week - when assisting at Mass, do you wear just a stole, or a dalmatic? My brother deacons, I wear a Dalmatic at mass - as i am assigned to a small parish with two other mission churches - I purchased my own dalmatics to use - I did not see the church buying them even though it is the churches responsibility. I have a white one also given to us by the diocese at time of ordination with the deacon symbol on it. Peace Jim
