Usually just the stole with exception of Weddings, Easter and Christmas when I also wear a white and gold dalmatic. This is most important during weddings when pictures are taken...for the wedding party, of course. Thanks to my bride for purchasing the dalmatic!

Alb and stole is the normal. We have a Diocesan vestment of White that we personally own so I wear it whenever White is appropriate. Parish does not own any Dalmatics. There are three deacons assigned to my parish. None of us own our own dalmatics other than the Diocesan white. Almost all of our Diocesan wide Masses use these white dalmatics which match the Diocesan Chasubles.

Simple question this week - when assisting at Mass, do you wear just a stole, or a dalmatic? (We'll assume there is a stole under the dalmatic. ) After taking the poll, you might also want to reply with a little more detail about who bought/owns the vestments, etc. In my own case, I couldn't really afford to buy a set of dalmatics for about 9 years or so I simply wore stoles I had purchased myself or that had been given to me as gifts. During a trip to Italy a few years ago I bought a full set of dalmatics and now I feel "naked" without one at Mass. Since that time, my pastor bought a set of matching rose colored vestments for us and just a few months ago he bought me (the parish) a dalmatic that matches the one he weaes for Lent, as well as a matching white dalmatic for the Easter season. I think that parishes in my diocese are now encouraged to buy dalmatics for deacons to wear though that wasn't really the case when I was ordained. As usual, the poll will stay open for 30 days and your response to the POLL stays strictly confidential, but if you REPLY to this thread it will appear as usual. Tim

I wear the Dalmatic. Our Bishop gave the deacons white dalmatics at ordination. Additionally all deacons received a red dalmatic from the bishop. The green and purple I had to purchase myself. The Altar Society just recently purchased a Rose dalmatic.

I over time bought three dalmatics. One (green) was given to me by one of my former pastors. It is the nicest one I have. I will always remember him for that. He passed to the next life about 10 years ago. Now since I have all four colors (don't have rose) I wear a dalmatic every Sunday.

At the insistence of my Pastor, I wear both the stole and dalmatic at all Masses. These vestments (all four major colours) were purchased by me from a company in Poland, lined for the winter months up here in Canada! I was 74 years, 8 months and 14 days old when ordained - is that some sort of outlandish record? God Bless one and all.

I was fortunate enough to receive dalmatics in all the colors except rose as ordination gifts. When i was first ordained in 2007 it was still somewhat common for deacons to serve at Mass in a stole. I have always worn a dalmatic myself except in cases where I was visiting a parish and no dalmatic was available. Now in our diocese it is required that deacons and con-celebrating priests vest properly for mass which means dalmatics and chausables. The days of stoles only at Mass, for both deacons and concelebrating priests appear to be over here, a least for now.

I wear Dalmatics in the diocese of Palm Beach and the diocese of Fall River. Both parishes purchased a full set in all the liturgical colors including pink to match the celebrants Chasuble. In prison I wear a clerical collar but do not wear any vestments because it is too much of a hassle to get them in.

For the twenty three years that I served in my home parish I only wore my own dalmatic for Easter vigil. Now that I'm in a parish that is fairly affluent, this parish has four sets of dalmatics & matching stoles in all liturgical colors. We use them at every mass. Bigj

We have 3 deacons at our parish and we purchased all of our own with the exception of one Dalmatic that the parish gave us as a gift when we were ordained.

I wear only a STOLE. special occasions a Dalmatic. I think the stoles is a clearer distinguish between Deacon and Priest.

My bishop gave me stoles as a personal gift at ordination. My Dalmatics were given to me by 2 different parishes and a seminary. Unfortunately the two most beautiful are genuine antiques of which one has rotted and fallen apart and the other is heading that way. I only wear it on the Major feasts but this Easter season I wear a simpler white Linen Dalmatic. My Parish Priest wonders why some Deacons only minister in their liturgical underwear - ie Alb only.

petrumoldova, I wonder the same thing. If dalmatics are available, they should be worn.
Peace to all
