The only time I've missed the diocesan retreat was a couple of years when I already had my vacation planned before the details of the retreat were made available. My wife doesn't join me due to her health. I keep promising myself I'm going to do a second retreat just for some peace. I'm thinking something like a motorcycle ride from Pittsburgh to Gethsemane Monastery in Kentucky (where I've been once before) for a week-long silent retreat. But I just never get around to scheduling it. As usual your poll choice remains completely anonymous and you are welcome to reply to this message if you want to expound a little. Tim

Our Diocese provides a retreat allowance for each priest, deacon and lay ecclesial minister.
We are now starting to track (through voluntary reporting) whether our deacons do, in fact, make a retreat.

The deacon community is so large and the retreat facility so small that two consecutive retreats are held during a week in January. For those deacons who cannot make it in January, we allow them attend the diaconate student retreat in May if they wish. Personal retreats are also allowable.
Annual retreats are mandatory and are paid for by the deacon's parish of assignment and student retreats are paid for by the Formation Program.

Our diocesan deacon+wife annual retreat was more a social occasion, which has benefits in its own right but does not serve my spiritual needs. The same has generally been true for our diocesan deacons only annual retreat. I have found it most spiritually rewarding to attend an annual Manresa retreat under the spiritual direction of the Jesuits. This is a men 0nly silent retreat and there are several Manresa centers in the US and Puerto Rico; the one I attend is in Convent, LA.

The "required" retreat is paid for by the parish assigned. I usually go to one of the diocesan scheduled retreats (there may be 2 for deacons and wives and 2 just deacons), and one non-clergy, with or without the bride. Of course, I submit to the parish either one. And fortunately, the parish has covered us both.
We are required to submit and "annual" report with info on retreats and other activities.

Within my diocese there are generally two diocesan retreats offered for the diaconate, however I have never attended either. To be clear, I do attend an annual retreat, but at a certain retreat house for the past 18-19 + years. There are a number of reasons why I do not attend the diocesan retreats. The first is that prior to my being ordain I went with a group of men each year that has now extended into my diaconate. Secondly I rather enjoy silent retreats and my brother deacons I'm told are less inclined to observe silence while on retreat. And finally the particular retreat house I attend each year is far more comfortable and spiritually meaningful for me. I should also mention that my wife does not attend retreats with me.

In our diocese the parish we serve pays for the deacons retreat and the deacon pays for his wife. The retreats are to includ both.

The parish pays for me to attend the diocese's annual Clergy Institute. My wife attends at our expense.
In addition, I attend, at my expense, an annual weekend retreat for deacons. This retreat is sponsored by the diocesan Office for the Diaconate.

As a prison chaplain I usually have a retreat with other Catholic chaplains once a year.

I usually go to the Capuchin Retreat Center in Washington, Michigan during the 3rd week in September for my retreat with a couple of other deacons from my area. This center is surrounded by all kinds of wilderness and wildlife - roughly 100 acres and is next to a large conservation area. If you like the outdoors, this is the place for you.
